Pictures have been taken thanks to Bernadette. Now I need to finish the write-ups for Etsy and I'll be ready to post. Unfortunately....this part takes me a LONG time! Inch by inch.............Gail Barnetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16049279207549952920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2000068099959212838.post-67834114896650184672013-01-15T12:21:00.003-08:002013-01-15T14:39:51.285-08:00What's New<br />
I couldn't wait to take great photo's of what I have been doing. .....my phone camera is going to have to do for now!<br />
<br />
My latest passion - Lampworking<br />
<br />
Italian glass rods are used to make each bead. I heat the glass until molten using a gas/oxygen torch and carefully wrap it around a mandrel to form the bead. This has really been a learning process but I am so loving it. After I have formed and decorated the bead to my satisfaction (that can take quite a while!) - I carefully place the bead in my kiln to begin the annealing process. (This is a high temperature soak to relieve all the possible stress inside the glass bead and prevent it's cracking.) When annealed the bead is cleaned and ready to be used.<br />
<br />
I am working on getting some photo's for my Etsy Store but this will give you an idea of what I have been doing to keep out of trouble!<br />
<br />
Forty eight one of a kind glass beads with black seed beads as separators on memory wire - make up this unique bracelet<br />
<br />

<br />
I have also been making a variety of simple pendants that can be put on leather or silk cord.<br />

Then this weekend I got yet another variety of the crud.......I am sick and tired of being sick. <br />
<br />
When I moved from Minneapolis my neighbor's son, Hitch gave me a bulb from one of his Mother's (Violet Lyman) plants that I had admired. I have this plant in my studio. It blooms twice a year - in the spring and in the winter. Each year it gets a little bigger. Everytime it blooms - it brings back great memories of a wonderful family and wonderful times. This is the first time the blooms have been so profuse...maybe time to repot and divide!<br />
Enjoy the taste of Spring....I sure am........<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
It has been a long time since I updated my blog. The first day of the new year sounded like a perfect place to start AGAIN!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
It was a long hot, dry summer. I worked a little in my studio but decided to take the summer "off" and learn something new. I have been making one of a kind jewelry and was looking for a new technique that would enhance the final piece. I took some lampworking (glass bead making) workshops and immediately fell in love. I began researching and planning how to revise my studio to make room for my new passion.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
First I had to put everything in my studio on wheels so I can reconfigure my studio depending on what I am working on. I now have three kilns (two for ceramics - one digital for glass) - and all moveable!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The more I learned - the more I realized what I didn't know! I slowly began getting the equipment that I would need - my torch - and then there is that assortment of new tools that would be required. I have found a few clay tools that I can use for my glass bead making - but not many.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
It was so much fun finding everything I needed (I had a hard time with what I needed and what I wanted...there is so much!) - I watched sales - searched on Craigslist - joined several online lampworking groups. I read morning, noon and night - watched videos. Just when I had almost everything I needed to get started - I discovered I was missing something - the most important part - the ventilation system. Dang.......I wasn't counting on that expense! I found Pam Brisse from The Blue Between. She has put photos of her new art studio (it was fabulous) and when I saw the vent system she had designed and installed - I knew I wanted to do the same thing. I made a few modifications and with the help of my great neighbor Al - it all came together. I had to order and wait for the oxygen concentrator, the inline fan and the outside vent cover that kept arriving smashed. Several MONTHS later - I had it all. I had my oxygen and my propane, my torch, my vent system, my glass, my tools, and a lighter!........I just needed courage to try it! Deb my instructor came and helped me (I just wanted to make sure - I didn't blow up myself or my house)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I was terrified the first time I used it but with practice - the fear has turned into pure joy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
In this picture the washtub hood is ready to try.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
It did not pass the incense test so I had to figure out how to create a tunnel for the air.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I found a welding curtain - added sheet metal screws to the tub and now the fumes go straight up and outside.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Here it is almost completed</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I soon discovered that some type of glass rod storage was necessary. So I made several containers</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
that hold my glass rods and stringers. So far they are handy and working well. I put them up on shelves by my torch area.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Next week I will finish photographing and post some of my beads and show how I am using them with my ceramic, fiber and copper beads.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

Happy New Year!</div>

These are the earrings I made for the 2012 Art Bead Earring Swap<br />
<br />
I made these for Cheryl. The ceramic hoops that have been stamped using my hand carved mold.<br />
The middle beads have a crackle glaze sandwiched between two silver spacers and black beads.<br />
They of course have sterling silver ear wires. I hope she likes them!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
These are the earrings I made for Stephanie. She said she liked bold colors!<br />
They are ceramic loops that have been pressed with my hand carved stamp.<br />
The inside beads are one yellow bead and tiny clay bead caps at the top and bottom of the bead.<br />
<br />
Tragedy struck. One of the earrings fell out of her ear and shattered. :(<br />
I promised Stephanie that I will start making her a new pair on Saturday (My Son and Bekkah are visiting me from Alaska and they will be leaving on Friday.<br />

Cheryl is from Canada! Hear earrings are glass beads that are a beautiful shade of blue with brown and copper swirls. At the bottom are small crystal coordinating beads. They are going to look fantastic with a linen outfit I have - they are just the right colors.<br />
<br />
Cheryl also sent a surprise with my earrings. A glass Angry Bird Bead. Unfortunately it won't be around long - when my granddaughter sees it....bye bye angry bird! She is going to love it! (He didn't exactly fit into the picture but part of him can be seen at the top of the picture)<br />
<br />
I wish you lived closer - I would be waiting on your door step to learn how to make glass beads!<br />
<br />
Thank you so much Cheryl - they are beautiful!<br />

<br />
I have already lost this post once trying to put multiple pictures on one posting. I will do them ONE at a time.<br />
<br />
I waited to open my earrings until they both arrived. That was yesterday. It was like Christmas! I love...love....love all of my earrings!<br />
<br />
The first pair of earrings that arrived were from Stephanie. They are beautiful! (I still want to hear the story behind the bees) I don't know if I am correct in my interpretation but the top bead is marbleized (like a mini earth). You didn't know it but turquoise is one of my most favorite colors! In the middle is a bee and finally the flat bead at the bottom looks like it has a jar carved on it - no double to hold all that honey from the bee!<br />
<br />
Thank you so much Stephanie!<br />

Have you ever hydroplaned across the highway? That was NOT fun!
Spring is in full swing here. I have the herb plants and seeds are planted. I have my new herb markers ready to add to the pots! I have made several types and have them available at my Etsy Store <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/GailBarnett "></a>

I think I will use copper as an accent and perhaps some wonderful glass beads or???? I love the hunt to find just the right pieces. I have tons to upload to Etsy so I am going to have to put this on the back burner for a while and I really think this is going to be more of a fall design. I have to trim the bowl and mug - attach the handles to the mug and add the designs. Sure glad I have everything on wheels so I can spread out in my studio!

I wanted to
throw on the wheel. I have not thrown anything for ages! In the 70's I loved to throw but I hurt my wrist and that seemed to end my career as a potter. Years later I had surgery but never tried wheel work again. Amazing - I can still throw - Now I have a long way to go but centering was a breeze. Guess it is like riding a bicycle! Here is my first attempt. A baby mug and bowl...looks like a perfect match to my bibs...stay tuned.....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When I open the kiln and see a rainbow of color - I am happy.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I finished the cords for these initial pendants. They will soon be listed on my Etsy site.<br />

She did ...... we did....so today I am doing the editing and will start posting later today.<br /><br />Last night, at twilight, the fish were extremely active in the lake. It seems a little early for them to be jumping but then I have seen my first snake and the bugs seem to be making themselves visible. Dang. (Isn't that what retirement is all about?) The other day I was looking through a stash of my handmade beads and decided to play with different color and texture combinations. After trying about eery combo I could come up I made my final selections.<br />I pounded copper for accent pieces - made the copper jump rings - searched my vintage glass bead collection for just the right accent beads . After I finalized the "look" I connected my beads to the copper chain. It is a fun necklace!<br />Let me know what you think - I love your feedback!Gail Barnetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16049279207549952920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2000068099959212838.post-32520277484055566092011-08-16T21:03:00.000-07:002011-08-16T21:23:26.284-07:00Beads....Beads and more beads!I can't believe that Summer is almost gone. It seems like for months I have been sketching - forming - carving -molding and glazing lots and lots of different beads and pendants! I have a kiln full just waiting to be fired. Just waiting for a day where the temperature is under 90 degrees outside.
<br />
<br />I have been taking photographs of the newest beads and I am just about ready to start posting to my Etsy site. http://www.etsy.com/shop/gailBarnett. I will start posting some of the latest pictures here later this week.
<br />
<br />I recently joined an Art Coop called the Blue Raddish (It is a great little store). If you happen to be in the area - stop by! I am also giving beginner bead making classes on Thursdays.

Wow! What she did with that pendant was AMAZING! Take a look. I can't even begin to imaging how long it took her to do it. I love her use of accent colors that she took from the Raku piece. It is so interesting to see what another artist would do with something you created. Thanks Susan! I hope we can partner again.Gail Barnetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16049279207549952920noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2000068099959212838.post-91579121506944006542010-05-08T09:35:00.000-07:002010-05-08T10:10:23.590-07:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSt5TMaL7oUsw7BYjYNE-8tUtQ1l5TJ26gsSwC907WZLzcehSwkNtJ0GF6uuA9eiJzSlxh6zzNluctNra2jec5IGdCih7EM_a2Buu5WXM-M0KSydy7hZsEhs6dfFEUMD8hguIpRf65fgM/s1600/Susan+Rouleau+-+Gail+Barnett.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSt5TMaL7oUsw7BYjYNE-8tUtQ1l5TJ26gsSwC907WZLzcehSwkNtJ0GF6uuA9eiJzSlxh6zzNluctNra2jec5IGdCih7EM_a2Buu5WXM-M0KSydy7hZsEhs6dfFEUMD8hguIpRf65fgM/s200/Susan+Rouleau+-+Gail+Barnett.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468941718641060418" /></a><br />Beads of Clay recently (well ok maybe NOT so recently) had us partner with another artist and swap beads/pendant and have the recipient create something from their work.<br /><br />I partnered with Susan Rouleau from South Dakota. I was so excited to get her package - Inside was a beautiful porcelain pendant with Mother of Pearl and Gold Luster. I wanted to make something where it's elegance would stand alone. I made an off white brocade evening bag with a gold lame lining. Her pendant became the button to hold the bag closed. I added a touch of gold, pearl and golden crystal beading to the bottom of the bag.Gail Barnetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16049279207549952920noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2000068099959212838.post-63653441527133961522010-01-25T12:23:00.000-08:002010-01-25T13:23:51.327-08:00What have I been doing lately?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikJ6Ylgc4Rcfu3bsHj0mHzjFvBEG2uYVXxORvS6PXA_FT4yWJKWfask5aU9VUEVK_dgbbiVdq9csJoXsEAsE4rqHGHSZo4ChLA6i2A-bZodwc1LnwMLkw9fzHAN6zgUfYW8pUsEIQhicQ/s1600-h/DSCN7815.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikJ6Ylgc4Rcfu3bsHj0mHzjFvBEG2uYVXxORvS6PXA_FT4yWJKWfask5aU9VUEVK_dgbbiVdq9csJoXsEAsE4rqHGHSZo4ChLA6i2A-bZodwc1LnwMLkw9fzHAN6zgUfYW8pUsEIQhicQ/s200/DSCN7815.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430790764140461618" /></a><br />I created these for the 2010 Bead Swap this month. This is my first time participating. It will be interesting to see the different beads and pendants I get (I will post pictures when I get them! It will be like Christmas in February.<br /><br />I have gathered almost all my supplies for yet another fun project. I have read Paul Lewing's excellent book on China Painting. Purchased a 'gaggle' of old china paints on Craigslist. In the box of paints were some REALLY old china painting books. They are amazing! These date back to when china painting was the rage - my grandmother's era! I am making my own 'fat oil' - thickened turpentine that I need for mixing with my paint pigment. Boy does it STINK! It should be thick and ready to use by mid February. I have lots of test tiles to practice on. I have lots of ideas and can't wait to get started!Gail Barnetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16049279207549952920noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2000068099959212838.post-80740129085145819742010-01-25T11:00:00.000-08:002010-01-25T11:17:10.375-08:00Silk Painting<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8cpExP1YRHW92hLl0UPHD-CYaEPWYcYsgaPd0dgRrb1LUv382lTfpIZFtaW2Pc7iL45z-igYLWPZvV3KBlVEjkswENSG_tfl0GjPRRkQBuh2orOfb6rrFJVP9H7NxtSASAuhgNMVl0-k/s1600-h/stained+glass+scarf+1f.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8cpExP1YRHW92hLl0UPHD-CYaEPWYcYsgaPd0dgRrb1LUv382lTfpIZFtaW2Pc7iL45z-igYLWPZvV3KBlVEjkswENSG_tfl0GjPRRkQBuh2orOfb6rrFJVP9H7NxtSASAuhgNMVl0-k/s200/stained+glass+scarf+1f.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430757741675490418" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVyHkyJGuvAgrdQR1y9oMbUTNT9UjZi874QlEJMxOp7wW74Gfu6EqGeowX8ep4txcJ9hTukIRjN4rZtXYoXWo_Q2JFdk0ClTo_oVFVneg3Gp5BcZ32y6sfC-_qcDdZgxbAP4nk1MQR804/s1600-h/stained+glass+scarf+2+f.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVyHkyJGuvAgrdQR1y9oMbUTNT9UjZi874QlEJMxOp7wW74Gfu6EqGeowX8ep4txcJ9hTukIRjN4rZtXYoXWo_Q2JFdk0ClTo_oVFVneg3Gp5BcZ32y6sfC-_qcDdZgxbAP4nk1MQR804/s200/stained+glass+scarf+2+f.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430757409221190210" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgomd-xeon7Lxv0mBXHJVA4N0Z4Ksit0q51VseMVSXbC0LHzrhCQTWc4mlJuN3KhOfieHX_lld0GeGdRIZbYYfvvBN7Il6CG4lgi-e0EB3VYW8__1zRFduZI-tC2mtlXAS43UP-FBrrPBs/s1600-h/square+scarf+3.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgomd-xeon7Lxv0mBXHJVA4N0Z4Ksit0q51VseMVSXbC0LHzrhCQTWc4mlJuN3KhOfieHX_lld0GeGdRIZbYYfvvBN7Il6CG4lgi-e0EB3VYW8__1zRFduZI-tC2mtlXAS43UP-FBrrPBs/s200/square+scarf+3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430756162728815698" /></a><br />The winter has been horrible! I have lots of china that I have collected to "someday" make a mosaic. I instead decided to create my own! The need for several wedding presents started my creativity! This is the one I did for Susie's son. The words came from their wedding invitation. Each piece of clay was hand formed, decorated, bisqued, glazed, raku fired, sealed and grouted. The red is actually a copper flash. I am still trying to get my camera to capture what is REALLY there! If at first you don't succeed......try try again!
